De 1989 à 1992, Joachim Kuckenburg était fonctionnaire d'état auprès du Bundeskartellamt (Office fédéral des cartels) à Berlin, au sein duquel il a acquis des solides connaissances en droit de la concurrence et du contrôle des fusions. De 1992 à 1998, il était conseiller auprès de la Cour Internationale d'Arbitrage de la Chambre de Commerce Internationale (ICC).

Avocat inscrit aux Barreaux de Berlin et de Paris, il intervient essentiellement dans le domaine de l'arbitrage et du contentieux international.

Arbitre mais aussi conseil, il a développé une compétence reconnue dans les domaines de contrats internationaux, vente internationale de marchandise, transferts de savoir faire technologique, ainsi qu'en matière de construction et installation technique.

Enfin, Joachim Kuckenburg est membre actif de l'IBA, de l'Institution allemande de l'arbitrage (DIS Deutsche Institution für Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit), du LCIA, de l'European Branch du Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, de l'International Arbitration Institute du Comité français de l'arbitrage et de l'Association Suisse de l'Arbitrage.

Il est listé dans le Who's Who in International Commercial Arbitration depuis 2004.
